The Springfield Fire Prevention Bureau

The Springfield Fire Department table of organization also includes a Fire Prevention Bureau. The Bureau currently is headed by Fire Chief James Sanford who also is licensed as a Fire Inspector, Fire Official, Fire Sub-Code Official and Construction Official. In addition a part time secretary handles the clerical duties. The inspections are conducted by the on-duty tour. The State requires the Fire Official to inspect Commercial, Industrial, Health Care, Special Residential and Educational Occupancies. These inspections are performed so that hazards can be identified and corrected.

In addition the Fire Prevention Bureau in conjunction with Fire Department personnel provide many programs to Township residents and businesses:

Public Fire Safety Education is regularly provided in the schools for Pre-k through 8th grade students.

Home Fire Safety Education is provided to residents when requested. Our personnel also speak at various Senior citizen and civic groups on Fire Safety.

TOT Finder Program: TOT Finder window stickers and literature are provided free of charge to residents in conjunction with the career firefighters and Springfield FMBA Local 57.

Juvenile Firesetter Program : This program provides evaluation and intervention for children under 17 years old who have either been involved in firesetting, playing with matches and other similar actions. Business training: The Bureau and Fire Department personnel also provide training for businesses and their employees. Typical programs consist of the proper use of fire extinguishers and also evacuation drills.

In addition the Fire Prevention Bureau provides Site Plan Reviews and Inspections in conjunction with the Springfield Building Department for the issuance of building permits.

Home Certificate of Occupancy : If you are selling your home you are required to have a certificate of occupancy. Please contact the Building Department at 973-912-2220 to set up an appointment for an inspection.

Fire Safety House: Various times of the year the Union County Fire Prevention Association's fire safety trailer visits grade schools in town. In addition the safety house is set up at the Springfield Rotary Clubs Flea Market at Jonathan Dayton High School and at some other town functions throughout the year.
