OFFICE OF THE MUNICIPAL COURT


Municipal Courts are statutory courts of limited jurisdiction having responsibility for motor vehicle traffic violations, disorderly and petty disorderly criminal offenses, municipal and county ordinance violations, certain penalty enforcement codes, health code violations and all other proceedings within the territorial jurisdiction of the Township. Practice and procedures are governed by New Jersey Court Rules and the Municipal Court Judge is responsible for overseeing the administration of his or her Municipal Court

The Springfield Municipal Court is located in the Town hall, on the second floor.

The Violations Office is open on Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Tuesday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Court is in session on Monday at 5:00 pm. Master Card and Visa are accepted for payment of fines. Summer Court sessions hours are as follows:

2013 DEPARTMENTAL COURT GOALS

  • Continue to implement Red Light Camera Enforcement Program
  • Implement a Disaster Recovery Plan for the Court
  • Update Municipal Ordinances in the ATS/ACS System
  • Fully implement the Municipal Court debt collection program with private vendor
  • Undertake security safety mock drills for Court operations
  • Continue cross training for staff
  • Continue to educate staff and others on the need for Court security based on AOC recommended procedures
  • Continue to support training for certification of Deputy Court Administrator
  • Implement new citizen inquiry/complaint reporting system

Defendant Rights

1. You are PRESUMED TO BE INNOCENT until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

2. You have the RIGHT TO BE INFORMED OF THE CHARGES against you.

3. You have the RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT concerning the charges against you and anything you say may be held against you.

4. You have the RIGHT TO RETAIN AN ATTORNEY.

5. You have the RIGHT TO BE ASSIGNED AN ATTORNEY if the judge determines that you cannot afford an attorney, and there is likelihood that if you are convicted, you will either go to jail, receive a substantial fine or your driver’s license will be suspended.

6. You have the RIGHT TO REQUEST A REASONABLE POSTPONEMENT so that you may have an opportunity to consult with your attorney and prepare a proper defense.

7. You have the RIGHT TO TESTIFY OR NOT TO TESTIFY on your own behalf.

8. You have the RIGHT TO CALL OR SUBPOENA WITNESSES to testify on your behalf.

9. You have the RIGHT TO APPEAL within 20 days of any conviction.
